HPE Investigates Alleged Data Breach After Hacker Claims of Stolen Source Code

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) data breach has come under investigation after a hacker group, IntelBroker, claimed to have stolen proprietary source code from the company. Reports suggest that the threat actor infiltrated HPE’s private GitHub repositories, APIs, and WePay services over a two-day period. The stolen data is allegedly being offered for sale on underground forums, raising significant cybersecurity concerns for HPE and its stakeholders.

According to cybersecurity analysts, the alleged breach may have exposed critical intellectual property, which could have far-reaching consequences for HPE’s products and services. The hacker claims to have accessed sensitive information, including:

  • Source code for HPE’s Zerto disaster recovery platform and Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) server management software.
  • Certificates, including both private and public keys.
  • Docker builds.
  • Personal information related to legacy user deliveries.

HPE acknowledged the breach claims on January 16, 2025, and promptly activated its cyber response protocols. The company disabled affected credentials and launched a comprehensive investigation to verify the authenticity of the breach and assess its impact. HPE has stated that, as of now, there is no operational impact on its business, nor is there evidence of customer data being compromised.

This development follows a previous breach in early 2024 when IntelBroker claimed to have compromised an HPE test environment. While some data was affected at that time, HPE clarified that the extent of the breach was not as severe as initially reported by the threat actor.

The HPE breach underscores the growing risks technology companies face in an era of sophisticated cyber threats. According to the Verizon 2023 Data Breach Investigations Report, nearly 74% of breaches involved human elements such as social engineering tactics, phishing, and credential theft—highlighting the evolving strategies of cybercriminals.

As investigations continue, cybersecurity experts emphasize the importance of adopting proactive measures to enhance cybersecurity measures and data breach prevention strategies. These include:

  • Implementing multi-layered security frameworks.
  • Conducting regular security audits.
  • Enhancing threat detection capabilities.
  • Strengthening incident response strategies.
  • Fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness among employees.

HPE is expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses, offering insights into the nature and extent of the alleged breach. The cybersecurity community will closely monitor the situation, as it serves as a critical reminder of the persistent and evolving threats faced by enterprises in safeguarding their digital assets.
