CenterPoint has around 2.8 million metered customers in the Houston Region. The company provides gas service to 1.9 million customers in Texas. The headquarters is in the CenterPoint Energy Tower in downtown Houston.
CenterPoint Energy has informed Texan authorities that the personal data of more than 1 million persons was leaked in a cyberattack. The company learned of the data breach after a public post by a hacking group. A month ago, CenterPoint informed the SEC that customer data had been exfiltrated from its systems. A hacker claimed on a known cybercrime forum that it had got hold of around 7.5 million user records from the Houston-based company.
As per the company’s filing, the compromised data includes names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and driver’s license numbers. Below is a statement from the company issued on Wednesday.
“CenterPoint Energy continues to actively investigate the cybersecurity incident disclosed last month. Upon learning of the issue, CenterPoint activated our incident response procedures and engaged external cybersecurity, forensic, and legal advisors to assist with the investigation.
We continue to work with third-party experts to assess the scope of affected customer data to identify which customers will be provided notifications in accordance with applicable legal requirements.
CenterPoint’s delivery of electric and gas services has not been impacted and remains operational and undisrupted.”
