AI Agents Tried to Hack Canadian Archive
Share
Autonomous AI agents penetrated a Canadian official website many times this year. Experts called it a series of unsuccessful, crude hacking attempts with the objective of obtaining old divorce records. Transluce, a nonprofit entity released a report with details of the activity. The agents used the collection-search function of Library and Archives Canada on May 28 and June 9. As many as 899 data requests were made ostensibly to detect vulnerabilities.
Only 13 data requests could be classified as potential attacks. Note that there were 3 attempted SQL injections. The aim was to obtain Canadian divorce data from 1905 to 1911. The lab described the agents’ tactics as “rogue” as well as “aggressive”. In the former’s opinion the attempts were unsuccessful. Transluce stated that it notified the Canadian authorities of the relevant incident on Monday.
The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security responded on Tuesday. There is no indication that government systems have been compromised at this time,” officials stated. Transluce did not disclose the lab or labs behind the agents. However, it hinted at OpenAI, citing “tactics consistent with prior observed agent activity that we have attributed to OpenAI in a similar timeframe.”
