Microsoft Introduces Feature in Teams to Turn Off AI Mid-meeting
Share
For your knowledge, the popular Microsoft Teams platform includes three AI features namely Copilot, Facilitator and Intelligent recap. They all come under the Meeting AI module. Now, licensed organizers and presenters can use the new Toggle feature to switch all 3 AI features on or off. They can also manually select which one(s) of the 3 available AI features should be on and which one(s) should be off. By toggling ‘Meeting AI’ off, all the 3 existing AI features are disabled. Similarly, by toggling ‘Meeting AI’ on, all 3 features are enabled. The authorized IT Administrator can choose to disable Meeting AI completely. In that scenario even licensed organizers and presenters can’t access all the three existing AI features on Microsoft Teams.
Reasons Behind the Step
This move by Microsoft is driven partly by criticism from Microsoft Team users over privacy and security concerns because of the existing AI features integrated into the communication platform. Thanks to this significant move, AI features can be used when needed as well as disabled at times when privacy and security is paramount.
Feature Roll Out Schedule
This feature is being rolled out in the US starting early July with complete rollout scheduled to be completed by July end. For the rest of the world, the concerned feature rollout will start in mid-July and commence by July end. So, there is a time lag between the rollout in US and the rest of the world.
A Final Note
Note that there aren’t any changes to existing compliance or licensing requirements. The toggle will not appear if Meeting AI is disabled by the Administrator. The new feature will be available on all devices such as Windows, macOS, mobile as well as web. So, all Microsoft Team users will have the facility to enable or disable any or all of the 3 existing AI functionalities at any time during a live meeting. The existing AI features in Microsoft Teams ramp up the user experience by offering useful functionalities such as smart suggestions, meeting summaries, translation as well as real-time transcription and more. Finally, know that guests and unlicensed participants cannot use the new feature.
FAQs
- What is the new AI feature in Microsoft Teams?
Microsoft has introduced an option that allows meeting organizers or users to turn off certain AI-powered features during a Teams meeting. This gives participants more control over how AI is used while the meeting is in progress. - Why would someone want to turn off AI during a meeting?
Some people may not want AI to create meeting summaries, take notes, or process conversations because of privacy concerns. Others may simply prefer traditional meetings without AI assistance. - Will turning off AI end the meeting or affect the call quality?
No. Turning off AI only disables supported AI features. The meeting, including video, audio, screen sharing, and chat, continues to work as usual. - Who benefits from this new feature?
Businesses, government organizations, schools, healthcare providers, and individuals discussing sensitive or confidential information can benefit from having greater control over AI during meetings. - Does turning off AI make meetings less productive?
Not necessarily. While AI can save time by creating notes and summaries, participants can still take notes manually and conduct meetings normally. The new feature simply allows users to choose whether they want AI assistance or not.
